Journal Entry #2: coluber constrictor - Black Racer
When I got back from taking out the trash one day this winter Mike was in the shop peering into the metal trusses supporting the floor above. Mike, what are you doing? I asked - Looking for snakes was his reply Snakes? Yea, we get black snakes in here this time of year, they like to wind themselves around the truss bars to help shed their skins. We saw no signs then, but a week or so later when Ron and I were running some cherry moulding across the router table we spotted a skin hanging down right above us. Just as Mike had predicted. Since then we've hosted two more racers in their annual renewal.
I was particularly amazed by the skins clear membrane where the eyes were - see last picture.
